ICONIC Leadership – Tama Smith

What does it mean to show up fully?
For Tama Smith, it means bringing ambition, values, lived experience, financial wisdom, and a commitment to impact into the same room. It means refusing to separate professional success from personal purpose. And it means recognizing that wealth becomes more meaningful when it expands possibility beyond one individual.
Tama’s understanding of wealth is rooted in lineage.
She was raised in Los Angeles by parents whose families came from rural Texas. Her family history includes ancestors born during or near the period of slavery and Emancipation, relatives who picked cotton, and early sharecroppers who worked to establish something lasting for the generations that followed.
Her maternal grandfather acquired more than 100 acres of land that remained in the family. He was also an entrepreneur who operated a country store and extended generosity to local farmers who could not always pay immediately.
From that history, Tama inherited a powerful combination: resilience, enterprise, stewardship, and service.
Her parents carried those values into their own financial lives. They worked, saved carefully, invested in real estate, and delayed having children until they believed they could afford to support a family. Their investments were not solely about personal accumulation. A duplex became a place where members of the extended family could live. Financial planning became a form of protection, stability, and care.
That early example shaped how Tama came to understand money.
It was not simply something to earn or spend. It was a resource that could create freedom, preserve choice, support family, and build a foundation that lasted.
Tama carried that drive into her education, entrepreneurship, consulting, corporate leadership, and wealth management career. Yet her journey also taught her that financial success alone does not automatically create a richer life.
During an intensely demanding period as the owner of a management consulting business, she worked across the country and internationally, carried responsibility for employees and payroll, and spent years moving at a relentless pace. She achieved financially, but she also recognized what constant work could cost.
That realization helped her reconsider the relationship between wealth and well-being.
A richer life, in Tama’s view, is not defined only by the size of an investment portfolio. It includes time, health, relationships, service, fulfillment, and the ability to align one’s work with what brings energy and meaning.
This is where her leadership connects naturally to Open Access and Collective Action within ICONIC Leadership.
Through her work focused on women’s financial empowerment, Tama creates conversations and pathways that help women become more informed, confident, and intentional about wealth. Her leadership acknowledges that women are increasingly earning, inheriting, managing, and directing significant financial resources, but access to money does not always come with access to financial knowledge, trusted guidance, or decision-making confidence.
Closing that gap requires more than advice.
It requires leaders who understand the personal, cultural, and generational experiences people bring to money. It requires creating spaces where women can ask questions without judgment, define wealth for themselves, and connect financial decisions to the lives and legacies they want to build.
Tama’s chapter invites readers to think beyond financial achievement and toward a fuller portfolio of impact.
What are you building? Who will benefit from it? Does your financial life reflect your values? Are you showing up authentically in the decisions that shape your future?
For Tama, iconic leadership is not about presenting a polished fraction of yourself.
It is about showing up fully, operating at your best and highest level, and using that fullness to help others live, lead, and build more richly.
