ICONIC Leadership – Monika Mital Gupta

Monika Mital Gupta: Expanding What Is Possible for Others
Leadership is often associated with having the answer.
Monika Mital Gupta’s journey suggests that some of the most consequential leadership begins with a different sentence:
“Can I ask a question?”
Monika learned early that access to opportunity is not distributed equally. Growing up across cities and small towns in northern India, she repeatedly entered new schools, adapted to unfamiliar environments, and worked with whatever resources were available.
Books became her refuge and education became her path forward.
But the path was not straightforward. As a teenager, Monika was told that physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and computer science were not appropriate choices for a girl. While her brother was encouraged toward an education he did not want, she had to fight for access to the subjects she knew she wanted to pursue.
When pressure mounted for her to abandon her education and enter an arranged marriage, Monika made a defining decision. She left home, reconnected with the grandmother who had always believed in education, earned a scholarship, and pursued a master’s degree in computer science.
That experience shaped more than her resilience. It gave her a lasting understanding of what access can change.
Monika knows that talent is often present long before opportunity appears. She also knows how easily potential can remain unseen when people lack financial resources, supportive networks, information, confidence, or permission to pursue a different path.
Her leadership has grown from that understanding.
Early in her career, Monika believed leadership meant finding the right answer. Over time, she discovered that lasting solutions rarely come from one person’s certainty. They emerge when leaders ask better questions, bring more perspectives into the conversation, and create the clarity people need to move forward together.
She now describes herself as a learner and explorer who leads with curiosity rather than certainty.
That approach became visible during a high-stakes project involving digital services for vulnerable children in the United Kingdom. Monika entered a room filled with senior leaders who had become stuck in circular discussion. Though she held less positional power than many of the people present, she raised her hand and asked permission to pose a question.
The room paused.
By reframing the challenge, connecting the different perspectives, and returning attention to the people the technology was intended to serve, she helped the group find a path forward.
The moment reflects a principle that continues to guide her work: technology may scale solutions, but leadership scales people.
This is where Monika’s story connects naturally to Open Access and Inclusive Foundations within ICONIC Leadership.
For Monika, inclusion is not simply about inviting people into an existing system. It is about examining whether the system gives them the resources, information, support, and influence required to participate meaningfully.
Her approach to technology follows the same principle. Products and platforms should not begin with what technology is capable of doing. They should begin with the human problem, the lived experience of the user, and the friction that needs to be removed.
That human-centered perspective is especially important as artificial intelligence reshapes how people work, make decisions, and gain access to opportunity. Monika believes women must be seen, heard, and involved in shaping how these systems are designed and governed. Otherwise, existing gaps and biases may simply be reproduced at greater scale.
Her chapter invites readers to reconsider leadership as an act of expansion.
Who has more choices because you led? Whose ability was recognized? Which barrier became easier to cross? What became possible for someone else because you used your knowledge, position, or voice?
For Monika, iconic leadership is not defined by how high one person rises.
It is defined by how many possibilities open for others along the way.
